Rain outside, The Blue Umbrella Inside.

So, its summer time and very soon monsoons are set to arrive. After a chain of sultry days finally we get some relief, Rain it is! Rain does make me happy and many people will relate to this.
So, sitting inside hearing the voice of raindrops falling, it feels amazing. I switched on the television in hope of watching a good movie and how fortunate I was, I did get to see one-The Blue Umbrella. Such a sweet and simple movie. The movie is an adaptation of the novel written by Ruskin Bond titled same as the movie. It completely brings out the simple things in our life. The movie shows a small girl named ‘Binniya’ and her love towards an umbrella she gets in exchange of her ‘bear claw’ locket from the Japanese tourists. How she becomes the apple of all the villager’s eyes.
The best thing the movie shows is that after getting the umbrella the small children are so happy and jovial and play with her as she holds onto her umbrella, day and night. But the adults of the village are jealous of her having the umbrella. The innocence of children is completely worth admiring.
Then one day her umbrella is lost and she is suspicious of the shop owner who earlier also had tried to take the umbrella in exchange of various items/money. The shop owner(Pankaj Kapur) then decides that he will also get the same umbrella and tell everyone that he is not the thief. Then he gets an umbrella by post which is red in color and gains the respect of whole of the village but Binniya is still suspicious of Nandkishore(Pankaj Kapur).Binniya then gets to know the address of the person who had sent him the umbrella and finds out that the umbrella came from a dyer. One day when he is made the judge for a wrestling match, it starts raining and what the villagers see is that the umbrella was dyed red color as the color washes out.The villagers abandon the shop owner and he lives a dull and a lonely life which upsets Binniya and so one day she visits his shop and leaves the umbrella saying that it is his umbrella. Nandkishore gifts her a bear-claw and takes the umbrella as a gift from her. Thus, he is free from the guilt of living as a thief and again regains his position as a shop owner among the villagers.
Such a simple movie, leaves you wondering about the little things in life. The shooting is done in Himachal Pradesh which is just marvelous, snow-covered mountains, greenery all around such solace to the eyes. Do watch the movie if you get a chance. It is worth your time. 🙂
